1 killed in Birmingham shooting; gunfire happened across street from children’s birthday party

Gunfire rang out just yards from where three young boys were celebrating their birthday in Birmingham, leaving one person dead.

The shooting happened about 6 p.m. Friday near 45th Place North and Eighth Court North in the Rev. Dr. Morrell Todd Homes public housing community in Kingston.

According to witnesses, at least six shots were fired at a male in a sedan just as he arrived in the hour. The shots were reportedly fired from another vehicle that left the scene.

The victim was pronounced dead on the scene.

Twin boys, age 8, and another boy were celebrating their birthdays at a large gathering directly across from where the shots rang out, according to witnesses. Partygoers said they ducked when the shots were fired, but the barbecue continued once the gunfire stopped.

The victim is Birmingham’s 125th homicide this year.
