Fire swept through a Birmingham home late Thursday night, leaving one person dead.

Firefighters were dispatched about 11:20 p.m. to a report of a blaze at 4904 Seventh Ave. South, said Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service Battalion Chief Jackie Hicks.

They arrived to find heavy smoke and fire coming from the one-story house. Hicks said crews quickly knocked down the flames.

“Unfortunately, while searching the home, one resident was found deceased,’’ Hicks said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
