1 killed, 6 injured in crash on I-59 in west Alabama; 2 kids airlifted to hospital
A multi-vehicle crash in west Alabama left an Ohio man dead, and six others injured including three young children.
The wreck happened at 1:03 p.m. Friday on Interstate 59, about four miles south of Boligee in Greene County. Two of the injured children had to be airlifted to the hospital.
Alabama State Troopers identified the fatality victim as Dustin J. Kirk. He was 37 and lived in Ohio.
Senior Trooper Brandon Bailey said Kirk was driving a BMW SW when he was struck by a Ford Escape. After the initial impact, the BMW then struck a Freightliner tractor-trailer.
Kirk was pronounced dead on the scene. His three passengers – Shala Cade, 32, Samantha Davis, 30 and Shane Kirk, 33 – all of Ohio, were transported to DCH Regional Medical Center.
The Ford Escape was driven by 24-year-old Haley Easterling of Mississippi. Three children in the Ford – ages 4 years old, 2 years old and 11 months old – were hospitalized. The 11-month-old and the 4-year-old were transported by helicopter.
The conditions of the injured have not been released.
The crash remains under investigation by troopers.
