1 killed, 2 wounded in overnight shooting in east Birmingham
An overnight shooting in east Birmingham left one man dead and two others injured.
East Precinct officers were dispatched at 11:40 p.m. Sunday to the 800 block of 50th Street North.
When they arrived at the location, said Officer Truman Fitzgerald, they found two men lying in a yard. One of them was unresponsive.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service pronounced one of them dead on the scene. The second victim was taken to UAB Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
While officers were investigating, they learned a third man showed up at the BP gas station at 5117 Richard Arrington Jr. Boulevard North. He, too, had been shot.
That victim was taken to UAB Hospital, also with a non-life-threatening injury.
Fitzgerald said the preliminary investigation shows that the first two victims were hanging out in the yard when the unknown suspect fired shots at them.
The third victim was a motorist driving along 50th Street when he was caught in crossfire and struck.
No arrests have been made.
The was one of two over the weekend that left multiple shot and someone dead. Less than 24 hours earlier, one man was killed and another wounded in 1700 block of 32nd Place North in the Norwood Bottoms community.
The Sunday night fatal shooting brings the city’s homicide total to 89. Of those, one was an officer-involved shooting by an outside law enforcement agency and seven others have been ruled justified and aren’t deemed criminal.
In all of Jefferson County, there have been 123 homicides, including the 89 in Birmingham.
