1 dead after shots fired in west Birmingham neighborhood
An early-morning shooting in a Birmingham neighborhood left one person dead.
Just after midnight, West Precinct officers responded to a report of someone shot in the 4800 block of Avenue N in Ensley.
Sgt. LaQuitta Wade said someone in the area heard shots fired and called 911. The city’s gunfire detection system – Shot Spotter – also registered at least nine rounds fired.
When officers arrived on the scene, Wade said, they found a young male had sustained a gunshot wound. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service pronounced him dead on the scene.
Investigators are still trying to determine what led up to the deadly shooting.
The victim, whose identity has not yet been released, is Birmingham’s 63rd homicide this year. Of those, one was an officer-involved shooting from an outside law enforcement agency and four others have been ruled justifiable.
In all of Jefferson County, there have been 93 homicides, including the 64 in Birmingham.
