One man is dead, and another is in jail after a shooting in eastern Jefferson County.

The shooting happened about 7 p.m. Monday on Town and County Circle.

Sheriff’s Lt. Joni Monday said witnesses told the deputies the victim and the suspect had been involved in a verbal altercation that turned physical. During the fight, the suspect reportedly fired a single shot, striking the victim.

The victim was taken to UAB Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.Authorities have not released the name of the victim, but said he was 31 years old.

The suspect called 911 and remained on the scene until deputies arrived.

The suspect – 21-year-old Eslam Mohamed Zaki – was arrested and booked into the Jefferson County Jail on a murder charge. He remains held without bond.
