1 charged, others sought in Bessemer shooting that killed 5-year-old boy, injured barber during haircut
A suspect has been charged in the weekend shooting death of a 5-year-old boy killed in a hail of gunfire while he was getting his hair cut at a Bessemer home.
Kendrick Rondell O’Neal, 26, is charged with capital murder in the Sunday slaying of Brandon Jamal Nation III. The charge is capital because of Brandon’s age and because shots were fired into a home.
The 25-year-old man cutting Brandon’s hair was also critically injured.
O’Neal is also charged with attempted murder and shooting into an occupied dwelling.
The deadly shooting happened at 10:15 a.m. Sunday in the 500 block of Seventh Avenue North.
Authorities said O’Neal was accompanied by others when they pulled up to the home with the intention of killing the adult victim. Three people got out O’Neal’s vehicle and opened fire with automatic weapons into the enclosed front porch.
Brandon was struck in the head. He was taken to Children’s of Alabama, where he was pronounced dead two hours later.
The adult victim was taken to UAB Hospital.
Police said dozens of rounds were fired. Several other people were inside the home, but were not injured.
O’Neal will be held without bond.
O’Neal, of Birmingham, was arrested in 2018 on charges of receiving stolen property, possession of marijuana, possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, leaving the scene of an accident, carrying a pistol without a permit, attempting to elude and reckless endangerment.
He pleaded guilty later that year to receiving stolen property and leaving the scene of an accident. He received a suspended sentence in both convictions.
Bessemer police Det. Justin Burmeister said investigators have identified other suspects and are actively pursuing them.
They questioned another person, but that person was released without being charged.
